Rev Ron Buss - June 2007Peter and six of his fellow disciples decided to go fishing in a small fishing boat on the Sea of Tiberias. Now in these days you did not fish for sport, nor did you sit relaxing on cushioned chairs with a soda and rod in your hand. It was a lot of work; the men who fished for a living and for food used mostly nets that had to be physically cast out onto the water, over and over again. This was a very tedious task and if one fished all night as these men did, and did not catch any fish, I would imagine you would not be very happy when the sun came up with nothing to cook for breakfast or to show for all of your hard work.
Now believing the majority of humans are right handed, I can only assume these men were also, and that they were used to fishing on the left side of the boat so consider this: As the boat drifts forward and knowing that you most always cast nets forward, I believe they cast their nets on the left side of the boat, as this would be a more natural throwing motion. How would you feel if someone from shore called out to you after an evening of unfruitful laborious fishing and asked you for some of your catch, you probably would have said exactly what they said, ”NO!”
Saints, let me ask you this: Are you doing the same things over and over again and not seeing any change? Do you wonder why you can’t get out of the rut you're in; going round and round the same mountain, without an end in sight? Are you exhausted trying all the new "get rich quick schemes" presented to you day in and day out? Throw your net out to the other side!
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children,
have you any
food?”
They answered Him, “No.”
6 And He said to them, “Cast the
net on the right side of the
boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and
now they
were
not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish (John 21:5-6).
Now they could have had an attitude about this suggestion from someone
they didn’t know, or perhaps they may have thought 'what the
heck we
have
tried it our way long enough, if this fails it won’t be our
fault.' They
took the
initiative and tried the different way and low and
behold, the new way worked! Then they realized that this man
was Jesus
(for Jesus is the Author and Finisher of all we do), and they hurried
to be with Him. We must
always hurry to be with Jesus for He is the Way
Maker.
When
God knitted and formed us in the womb, He implanted a quality of
Uniqueness assigned to each individual; 13" For You formed
my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I
will praise
You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:13-14).
We
must enhance,
cultivate and see to it that the gift God has given is
not wasted by foolishly and routinely following the paths of compliant
complacency. 12
"Then you will call upon Me and go and
pray to Me, and I
will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you
search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, says the
LORD, and I will bring you back from your captivity" (Jer 29:12-14).
Destiny wrote this cute but relevant story from her new line of
children’s books called “Giggles in the
Garden” that many of us probably can relate to. In a garden
there was this beautiful apple tree full of perfectly formed red
apples. On the very top, out of reach even from the tallest of ladders
was the biggest, reddest most perfect of all apples, and Giggles
convinced herself that only this apple would ever do. So up she
climbed; twisting, contorting, slipping and scratching she climbed,
ignoring all the other perfectly shaped apples around her; focused only
on the one at the top. When she finally reached it, she held it in her
little scratched and bruised hands and took a bite, and out came the
biggest worm she had ever seen!
Do
not waste all your
energy seeking
after what you perceive to be the best when God surrounds you with the
abundance and perfection that is for you. Call upon the unique gift
that is implanted within you to make the right decisions
and to be the
best you can be--not for someone else, but for you. You are responsible
for your actions and at the end of the day I hope that you can say,
“I did it God’s way.”
HERE'S THE NUGGET:
If
you would only cast your net to the other side and do it
God‘s way and not the worlds way, you then would find the
peace and satisfaction that you are seeking.
LET US PRAY: Father
we thank You for Your Word that goes forth. We know that when
Your Word is spoken, it will never return to You void of
purpose. Holy Spirit give us eyes to see what has been laid
out
for us. Teach us to walk the narrow path that isn't always easy, but is
the only way that leads to peace. Masterful Jesus, speak to us as we
live You here on earth. In Your Name we pray, Amen.
